Following the approval of an amendment to the Statistics and Census (Jersey) Law, responsibility for producing the Code of Practice passed to the Chief Statistician.
Following consultation with the Statistics Council and departmental Lead Statisticians and Analysts, the Chief Statistician has updated the Code of Practice. This adopts the key principles of trustworthiness, quality and value.
These three pillars of the Code of Practice make sure statistics:
- meet the needs of users
- are produced, managed and disseminated to high standards
- are clearly and objectively explained
Tier 1 Statistics must comply with the Code of Practice for Tier 1 Statistics. Producers of other statistics in public authorities are encouraged to apply the Code as far as possible including, in particular:
- Ensuring that statistics and analyses add value and are of appropriate quality
- Publication of public authority statistics
- Pre-announcement of statistical releases via the release calendar
- Notifying users promptly of errors and revisions.
- Separation of statistical press releases and statistical reports from ministerial or policy comments on the report.
