The Jersey Statistical System (JSS) is made up of public authority organisations that work together to produce, manage, and disseminate statistics.
Governed by the Statistics and Census (Jersey) Law, the JSS ensures the delivery of high-quality, impartial, and reliable data for decision-making and public accountability.
Chief Statistician
The Chief Statistician leads Statistics Jersey and oversees the production of public authority statistics. Appointed under the Statistics and Census (Jersey) Law 2018, the Chief Statistician operates independently, making decisions on data collection, methods and publication without external influence.
The Chief Statistician works with other public authorities that produce statistics, to ensure consistency in statistics and alignment with international best practices. Additionally, the Chief Statistician works closely with the Statistics Council, considering its advice to ensure that statistics are transparent, reliable, and useful to the public.
Statistics Jersey
Statistics Jersey serves as Jersey’s national statistical office and is responsible for overseeing the production and dissemination of statistical reports of interest to, and which assist with decision making, by public authorities, other undertakings and individuals including the public.
Statistics Jersey is responsible for gathering and processing data related to Jersey’s economy, population, and society. This includes conducting censuses and surveys to provide statistical reports.
Other Producers of Statistics
Several public authorities across Jersey contribute to the JSS by producing sector-specific statistics. These authorities include government departments and agencies involved in areas such as health, education, economy, and environment. Many of these producers have webpages where they publish their data and statistics.
Statistical outputs published by other public authorities can be found in the release calendar.
Statistical Producers Group
The Chief Statistician has established a Statistics Producers’ Group (SPG) to provide coordination across the Jersey Statistical System. Members can share information on professional practice and work together to increase standards of statistical production across all public authorities. The SPG will prepare a statistical work programme.
