Introduction
The 2024 population and migration estimates have been produced using administrative data sourced from public authorities. The 2024 reporting has been divided up into four separate reports:
- population and migration statistics for the population as a whole, and broken down by age and sex
- experimental population and migration statistics broken down by Control of Housing and Work Law status (Registered, Licensed, Entitled for Work, Entitled)
- experimental population and migration statistics broken down by self-declared nationality and newly included data on work permit status
- a report that details the methodology and data quality
Headlines
At the end of 2024:
- Total population was estimated to be 104,540; an increase of 510 people over the year
- Six percent of people aged 20 and over had Registered status, corresponding to 5,430 people
- Nearly a third (32%) of this Registered population held a temporary work permit
During 2024:
- Natural change remained negative as Jersey saw more deaths than births
- The population still increased, due to net migration, which was +670
- Net migration was +960 among people with Registered status but -810 for those with Entitled status
Over the five years from 2019 to 2024:
- The population aged 65 years and over grew by 12%
- The number of under 16-year-olds fell by 7%
- The working age population remained stable (this age group would have declined without net migration being positive)
- The number of people with Entitled status increased by 2% to 70,430 people (despite negative net migration, due to the number of people gaining Entitled status each year)
- The number of people with Licensed status increased by 41% to 3,250: those with Registered status decreased by 3%, down to 5,430
- The number of people with a rest of world nationality increased by 172%, from 1,850 to 5,030 people
- The number of people with a European nationality decreased by 7% from 16,650 to 15,550
- The number of residents with a temporary work permit increased from less than 100 at the end of 2019, to 1,740 people at the end of 2024
