The Statistics Council was established under amendments to the Statistics and Census (Jersey) Law 2018, replacing the former Statistics Users Group.

It represents the interests of statistics users and plays a key role in maintaining high quality official data.

The Statistics Council:

  • advises public authorities on the production, use, and accuracy of statistics that provide insights into Jersey’s economy, population, society, and environment
  • offers guidance on Tier 1 statistics, Jersey’s most important official data
  • can raise and publish concerns about the quality and reliability of key statistics
  • provides a platform for the public and data users to engage with the Chief Statistician, Statistics Jersey, and other public authorities on statistical matters

History

Prior to 2025, the Statistics Users Group (SUG) performed a similar role to the Statistics Council. Its role was to oversee the quality, relevance and integrity of the statistics compiled by or on behalf of a public authority. This involved reviewing and commenting on any official statistics prepared or published by the Government of Jersey.
