Our role and responsibilities
Statistics Jersey is the National Statistics Office for Jersey, established under the Statistics and Census (Jersey) Law 2018.
It operates independently and is led by the Chief Statistician, who oversees its work and ensures compliance with professional statistical standards.
Statistics Jersey provides data and analysis to support decision-making for government, businesses, charities, the media, and the public. It also helps shape public policy and improve public services by coordinating data use and reducing unnecessary duplication.
As head of the Jersey Statistical System, the Chief Statistician upholds the independence of official statistics, ensures high professional standards, and supports the development of statisticians working in public service. They also act as the government’s chief advisor on statistics.
How we produce statistics
Statistics Jersey:
- publishes key data on Jersey’s economy and population, including inflation, house prices, migration, and census results.
- conducts regular surveys, such as the Annual Business Survey, Household Spending and Income, and the Jersey Opinions and Lifestyle Survey.
- uses existing administrative data where possible to reduce duplication.
Our reports:
- are free and available online.
- are published at 10 am on weekdays, following the schedule on the release calendar.
- are not shared outside of Statistics Jersey before publication, except in exceptional cases. These situations would be documented. No such access is currently granted.
Professional standards
The Chief Statistician is responsible for the Jersey Statistics Code of Practice for Tier 1 Statistics and supporting and maintaining professional standards in the production of statistics by public authorities in Jersey.
The Chief Statistician is responsible for advising on whether statistical series meet the professional standards required to become Tier 1 Statistics.
Legal basis
In September 2024, the States Assembly amended the Statistics and Census (Jersey) Law 2018 to align Jersey’s Statistical System with international best practice.
Statistics Jersey, officially the Office of the Chief Statistician (OCS), is Jersey’s National Statistics Office. All statistics produced by Jersey public authorities fall within the scope of the Statistics Law.
The Statistics Council oversees the Jersey Statistical System by:
- advising public authorities on the production, use, quality, relevance and integrity of the official statistics (statistics that describe Jersey’s economy, population, society and environment)
- advising any person or body in relation to Tier 1 statistics
Annual reports and business plans
Each year the Chief Statistician must produce an annual report.
After each new Common Strategic Policy (CSP) has been approved by the States Assembly, the Chief Statistician must produce:
- a plan for Statistics Jersey’s outputs covering the term of the CSP, and
- a strategy for the Jersey Statistical System
